Lt. Gov. Skillman Leading Again

Veritas Rex observes that the quiet, conscientious work of government -- especially effective government -- often goes little noted.  We did have the privilege of watching good government in force today as Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman met with a group of faith-based social service providers helping hurting Hoosier families. She listened, she informed, she explained, and she discussed her responsibility to provide a measure of leadership for all 6.2 million Hoosiers in her role as a statewide officeholder.

We hope she continues providing such leadership for Indiana, including social service providers who have many questions about the upcoming reforms within the Family and Social Services Administration, the sincerity and staying power of the effort to develop relationships between state government and faith-based groups, and the positions of the Administration on a few, hot-button social issues much in the news.

It is comforting for such groups and their leaders to know the Lt. Governor has a proven record during her service as a State Senator (100 percent pro-life; strongly pro-family, including being a co-sponsor of SJR 7) and obvious personal credibility on these issues. She also has an understanding of the language and views within this community as the granddaughter of two ministers.

This Administration's pro-life positions and the Governor's personal commitment to family and faith are stories that needs to be told and re-told by a credible messenger for this Administration to succeed in the hard, quiet work of effective government for a peoples as diverse as 6-million-plus-Hoosiers. And there are none more credible than the Lt. Gov. in telling that truth.

Lt. Governor Skillman has consistently demonstrated strong values and also a strong will to do what's right. She's got the skills to negotiate and "get to yes" - an approach sometimes found wanting in other areas of the building. Good for her!

I've always admired Becky as a role model for women in leadership. She's an honorable lady who treats even her poltical adversaries with respect. She's never betrayed her conservative values, yet you would have a hard time finding even a liberal Democrat with a bad opinion of Becky as a person. She's a class act.
